The long, hot summer continues... in our dreams

After three days getting sun-burned at Southport watching Lancashire lose to Warwickshire it was back to reality at Astley Bridge. The first specks of rain hit the windshield as I got in the car and a continuous drizzle held play up for half an hour. The match was reduced to 47 overs a side. Paul Tebay won the toss and invited Bridge to bat.

South African overseas Richard Smith and James Shuttleworth put on 21 before Smith hit Sajid Shah in the air to mid off. It looked to be falling short, but Tebay dove forward scooping it inches from the ground. Anyone taller would have struggled to get down quick enough. Smith out for 7. Shuttleworth had moved on to 17 when he was out to a similar shot. Caught Lee Entwistle, bowled Renier Potgieter, Bridge 33 for 2.

Paul Burton and pro Shahid Mahboob added 33 before Shah bowled Burton for 18. Matthew McGuinness only hit 1 of the 20 runs added as Mahboob struck out lustily before he fell to Sajid. Mahboob himself going in the next over, bowled Shah for 41 with 9 x 4s. 87 for 5. It soon became 93 for 6 when Martin Seddon was well caught by Andy Kilner of Myles Cunliffe for 2. Bringing together Bridge captain Steve Entwistle and Andy Northrop.

As with most of our games of late we always seem to get stiff resistance from the middle to late order batsmen and struggle to stop the tail having a wag. Entwistle and Northrop did just that with a stand of 53 for the 7th wicket. Sajid eventually getting the breakthrough bowling Northrop for 22. A superb throw from Paul Stafford let Tebay take the ball at the bowlers end and whip the bails off with Entwistle out of his ground. Run out for 31 with 3 x 4s. 147 for 8. Jimmy Dakri didn't stay around long for his 2 before being bowled by Potgieter. 148 for 9.

The last pair of Saji Mahmood and young Danny Guest defied the Bradshaw attack holding out to complete their overs and add a vital 15 runs. Mahmood 12no and Guest 2no. A total of 163 for 9 being more than Bradshaw would have liked after having them 93 for 6. Sajid Shah returning his best figures of the season to-date with 5 for 47 from 18.

Tea brought rain and it wasn't until just after 6.30 that Bradshaw were able to start their reply. Paul Stafford showed his intention to try and knock off the runs in however few overs they received by hitting the last ball of Mahmood's first over for 6. But it was his only scoring shot as half way through his second over the rain chased them from the field permanently with the score on 7 from 3.3 overs.

Bradshaw get 10 points, Astley Bridge 8 points.
