Derek Kay:

So we’ve got through almost the first month of the Season – and its time for a review

First up – a belated welcome to our Professional for the Season – Usman Arshad, who announced himself in record breaking style, only one day after landing in the UK (more later). We are delighted to welcome Ussi to Bradshaw and I know everyone will do their best to get him settled in and then we can all sit back and enjoy him play. Special thanks to Sheila Johnson for all her hard work and determination in dealing with the UKBA as our “sponsor” – when I asked Sheila to get involved I told her it would only involve a signature – I’m not sure what she thinks now after 37 telephone calls – 6 applications – and 2 visits to our local MP !!

I don’t intend to cover each match we have played thus far except to congratulate one or two players who have started the season in great form – new boy Pete Walters has begun superbly with bat and ball, the highlight being a match winning unbeaten century against Eagley. Whilst that batting performance was matched in the 2nds by Nigel Duxbury – well done Nig. Rob Counsell has begun the season brightly with wickets in almost every match for the 2nds whilst Pat “Cow” Hamer has done well in a couple of matches with bat and ball – even though he does keep back chatting me at Training when he’s diving for the ball and missing it!! What about the start Johnners has made – no practise, straight in from football and shoved in to open the batting – scoring 60 against Farnworth and 70 against Tonge – great to watch and long may it continue (keep picking the right ball). Zaffi
has also started in great form, with 70 against Eagley and 86 against Tonge - great start, now let’s keep it going.

The season has not all been plain sailing with a long term injury to Club Captain Craig Duxbury meaning we may miss him for the majority of the season – but we’re lucky to still get his input from off the field. Also injuries to Andy Taylor and Pete Halliday have caused a bit of re-shuffling but, touch wood, they’re both getting back towards 100% and we’re certainly going to need them.

Training on Tuesday nights has been good thus far – lots of players attending – and of course the weather has shone, talk of the weather brings us to last weekend when the ground looked absolutely immaculate and the match wicket was magnificent (grateful thanks to Father Morris) – we posted a League breaking record score of 436 for 4 with new Pro Usman scoring a mammoth 191 not out which broke Bradshaw’s individual highest ever score – not a bad start Ussie – but what can you do for an encore next weekend??

We’ve had a decent start to the season - it seems to be a damn sight better than decent compared with our poor performances in recent seasons - but that’s all it is decent. Now is where the hard work really starts – can we string another good month together, against some of the tough teams in the League – or will we be found wanting when the going gets tough – when we need a great all round team performance – or we need a couple of players to put their hands up – will we roll over as we have in the past or will we see that bit of steel which says we’ve got some backbone this season and we won’t be bullied by the top dogs.

I know which I expect to see  -  but can you deliver, can you turn optimism into reality  -  I think you can  - BUT do you, and will you ??

 Good Luck

 Derek

Beer Festival:

" The beer festival held last weekend was once again a great success, helped by some fantastic weather. A massive thanks to all volunteers and helpers from the committee and members for giving up your time, without this the event would simply not be as successful. Our treasurer is still compiling the financial facts and figures and when we have them we will let you know the result in due course, but whatever the final amount is, we will be giving a generous donation to the MND charity."

Final Pre-Season update – from Derek

Spring has sprung - Clocks are ready to go forward (or is it back) – Easter is just around the corner – and in less than 3 weeks we’ll be out in our whites playing cricket

Time therefore for one final pre-season meeting  -  I’m not giving you much notice for this one  -  FRIDAY 26th March at the Club for a 8pm start – just enough time to have a good discussion over a couple of sherberts!!

Seriously, we’ve still got plenty to sort out with regard to the start of the season – not least being the weekend of 10th / 11th April when we’ve got to get all the painting done of boundary boards – walls – seating – sightscreens etc, etc.

We’ve still got one more Indoor Net Session at Bolton School on Saturday 27th March (apologies for the last one being cancelled at short notice) and it would be good to see plenty of you down!! You must all be fit and raring to go because I’ve been disappointed with the turnout at the net sessions. Anyway we’ll find that out pretty soon because one of the reasons for meeting on Friday is to sort out some outdoor training sessions – and I do mean training not cricket practise.

You will all remember that at the last meeting some of you were asked to sort out various “rules and regulations” that we were all going to comply with during the coming season. I will look forward to seeing and hearing what you’ve come up with – ‘cos you’ll also remember that I said if you don’t come up with some suggestions of your own then I will simply impose mine.

Anyone coming to the Net session on Saturday please bring a £10 note  -  to help pay for the cost  -  if there’s 14 of us present then £140 will pay for the whole Booking.

Look forward to seeing you on Friday - all senior players and senior Juniors

The Annual Quiz Night held on the 19th March was once again a resounding success and thanks to everyone who came along. A special thank you must go to the genial quizmaster Stuart 'Joe Royle' Gregory who's efforts in putting together the questions and his presenting on the evening were fantastic. We raised over £500 towards the club refurbishments and it was great to see a full clubhouse, so thanks again for your support.

Mark Gwlit

A message from Steve Dickinson:

I would like to give a big thank you to all players, members and  their families, who's help was greatly appreciated and the turnout was the best ever. Please note. The next working weekend, when we need to get the ground ready is the 10th & 11th April. A similar turn out would only mean a one day job. So please all players and members please make a note of these dates in your diaries.

Many thanks for all your hard work,

Chairman

A messaged from Derek Kay:

Gents,

Just a quick update – mainly to give all you Players a couple of reminders – but before doing that can I thank those of you, Seniors and Juniors, who took the time and trouble to think about what you want to achieve in the coming season. I firmly believe that setting goals – short term / medium / and long term – together with accompanying action plans on how you intend to achieve those goals - is a key starting point in actually beginning to strive to reach your / our goals.

The goals you have set are YOURS – the action plans on how to reach those goals are YOURS – they will remain YOUR responsibility and depend on YOUR commitment – as we progress through the season there will be many opportunities to review your progress with Coaches – please take those opportunities because we all want YOU to succeed.

As most of you are aware Senior Indoor Nets have been going on for a number of weeks now and eventually the weather will begin to warm up (I hope) as we move into Spring and the Season gets ever closer, which brings me to my 1st reminder  -  the first weekend in March, which is only just over a week away, we need all the Players – Juniors and Seniors – to help in beginning to get the Ground ready for play – cleaning / tidying / painting / mending / making / painting / fixing / painting etc etc. Now don’t panic, we don’t need you every hour throughout the weekend BUT we do need you for an hour minimum, two would be better, 4 would be fantastic, both days will earn you – wait for it – grateful thanks.

Please – this is not a demand – don’t see it as that, but rather see it as part of your responsibility – your commitment – how much time are YOU prepared to give to help get YOUR Club, YOUR Ground ready for the season YOU are going to play in.

There’ll be Tea and coffee – bacon butties etc for you all – so get yourselves down – I’ll expect to see you sometime over that weekend.

My 2nd reminder is that on Saturday 6th March we begin Training at Bolton School 5pm prompt  -  yes the time’s iffy – but again we’ll see what your commitment is like !!   -  and for those of you who want a personal invitation I will expect to see the following there :-Craig / Phil D/ Nick / Phil J / Uni Nick / Chris / our Aussie boys if they’re back / Mike / Zaffi / Lewis /Deano / Jordan M / Jordan G / Patrick / Danny / Andy / Nev / Robert and Gareth

 See you all soon

A messaged from Derek Kay:

Hi Everyone  -  I promised you an update and having just watched England get blown away in the final Test against South Africa with a day to spare -  now seems a good opportunity as there’s nothing else on the box for a while !!

We played in the Axford Indoor Competition last week – a tough match against very good opposition in Walkden – and despite a good batting performance from Phil Dicky (retiring on 25 – almost as many as he scored all last season – oops, Sorry Phil, only joking) – my predictions in the New Year message were a bit hit and miss – yes Willy didn’t disappoint with the wides but Patrick managed to get through the match unscathed, even if he did get run out (but don’t worry about that Pat everybody gets run out in this Competition, in fact when I used to play in the Indoor I ran out every single player on my team – regularly – I think I ran out Gary Chadwick on every occasion we played together !!) Uni doesn’t seem to be doing much for Nick Lever – out stumped in the 1st over – stumped in an indoor hall, where were you trying to hit him – dancing down the track and over extra cover to crash against the wall and rebound to the opposition ? – what a lemon !! Young Danny did very well behind the sticks – just got lots of elbow grazes from flinging himself full length trying to collect Willy’s wides.

As you will have gathered from the above we got beat – not disgraced – we scored 96 and Walkden knocked them off pretty comfortably – just time for Uni Nick to get into an intellectual disagreement with the Walkden skipper (join the Club Nick – you’re member 472).

I am delighted to say that the Seniors Indoor Nets start on Friday 29th January at St Joey’s School, Horwich  -  Buckers will be sending out a text to everyone with the details and - more good news – you’ll all be delighted to know that I’ve fixed up another Players Meeting for Friday 5th February at the Club – once again Buckers will send everyone details.

For those of you who made the last get together you’ll know we’ve got plenty to talk about – and for those of you who didn’t or couldn’t make the last one – then you’d better get to this one ‘cos I ain’t issuing second invitations !!

We’ve lots to sort out before the Season gets on top of us so I’ll look forward to seeing you – and that means everybody – 1st teamers / 2nd teamers / Senior Juniors – and if you don’t know which you are then I suggest you turn up and I’ll tell you !

 See you at Nets

A messaged from Derek Kay:

Happy New Year -
Best wishes to everyone for a successful Year and particularly cricket season

Whilst we’re all suffering at the moment with the Arctic weather – snow and ice – it’s good to look forward to the upcoming cricket season, which always comes quickly once we are into the New Year

Indeed for some of our players – the season starts this coming Sunday with our participation in the Anthony Axford Indoor Cricket Competition at Bolton School where we take on Walkden CC.

I sincerely hope the lads have kept themselves fit over the Christmas period and I look forward to seeing Willy bowling his quota of wides as he struggles to control the swing – Nick Lester crashing the ball into the roof of the indoor hall and then ducking for cover as the ball ricochets all over the place with fielders trying to catch him one-handed (for those who don’t know its old fashioned backyard cricket rules one hand catches off the wall and you’re out) – and Johnners calling his teammates for a single with a Yes – No – Wait – as the ball rebounds off the wall straight to the bowler for an easy run out – Sorry !!

Making his debut this weekend in the Competition will be Patrick  -  I’m really looking forward to seeing him fielding as the ball comes crashing towards him from all angles – keep your eyes open Pat otherwise you’ll be wearing one !! (It’s got to be better than freezing on the terraces at Gigg Lane)

Seriously boys – Good Luck  -  remember there are some techniques to playing this game

Before the Christmas break we had a Players Meeting at the Club to discuss the upcoming season and those who attended will be aware that January 21st is your deadline for producing some information – you know what I’m referring to – I look forward to receiving same and if anyone wants any help and advice you know where I am.

We’ll arrange another get together very soon – hopefully when the snow has all gone – so watch this space and keep in touch.

 Best wishes

 Derek
